Radiation Safety
Course Description

This course includes didactic lecture and clinical application of X-ray safety, bisecting and parallel techniques, processing digital X-ray (Dexis) training and evaluation of digital X-rays. For this course, there will be in-class lectures, a course handbook, and one-on-one training using dental X-ray manikins and human subjects.

Who Should Take This Course?

Any employed dental personnel who takes dental X-rays for patients in a dental facility must complete a 32-hour dental board approved course in radiation safety.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Name and identify basic oral anatomy.
  • Describe techniques used for taking oral radiographs.
  • Explain procedures for protecting the patient from exposure.
  • Understand the steps in manual and automatic film processing.
What to Expect
  • Day 1: Lecture, written exam, and X-ray Manikin Practice
  • Day 2: Clinical Examinations*

*Students must bring in four volunteer patients to complete X-rays on. Volunteers must not have braces and be younger than 18 years of age.

This program is all-inclusive and includes all supplies.

Coronal Polish
Course Description

Coronal Polish is the procedure that removes plaque and stain from the coronal surfaces of teeth, leaving the patient with a “clean and sparkly” feeling. Section 1086 of the California Code of Regulations permits a registered dental assistant to perform coronal polishing subject to certain conditions. The student will demonstrate the proper procedure for a complete mouth coronal polish.

Who Should Take This Course?

This certificate is a requirement of the California Dental Board for unlicensed dental assistants and dental assistants who are seeking to become an RDA, renew an RDA license or perform coronal polishing on patients in a dental office.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the coronal polish procedure to patients.
  • Utilize proper armamentaria in an organized sequence for disclosing and polishing.
  • Demonstrate proper polishing techniques using appropriate cup adaptation, stroke and handpiece use.
What to Expect
  • Day 1: Lecture, Written Exam, Clinical Practice
  • Day 2: Clinical Examinations*

*Student must bring in two volunteer patients in order to perform the clinical examinations.

Infection Control
Course Description

At Sugarbug, we are offering a one-day, eight-hour infection control course where you will learn the basics of infection control and how to minimize contamination risks at a dental practice. We do this every day because our patients’ safety is critical to our mission; so let us show you how it is done!

Who Should Take This Course?

The California Dental Board requires all dental assistants to complete a comprehensive infection control course. It is mandatory by law. Sound scary? It's not, and Sugarbug will help break it down for you.

Dental Practice Act
Course Description

Although its primary objective is to safeguard the public, the California Dental Practice Act is an excellent resource for dental professionals to ensure compliance with state law. The California Dental Practice Act is the body of laws in the California Business and Professions Code and the California Code of Regulations governing dental professionals, including dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, dental assistants and dental hygienists. The act is intended to serve as a legal guideline for both professionals and the public regarding all aspects of dental practice.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course fulfills the California Dental Board biennial requirements for relicensure and is required for those that are planning to submit an application for the registered dental assistant license.

Course Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Acquire the information and resources needed to find information related to the scope of practice for auxiliaries and dentists and requirements for maintaining a license in good standing.
  • Recognize unprofessional conduct.
  • Demonstrate basic understanding about the laws governing the prescribing of drugs, mandated reporter obligations and signs of abuse.

Basic Life Support (BLS)
Course Description

The American Heart Association AHA's BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. It reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

Who Should Take This Course?

The AHA’s BLS course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Administer high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants.
  • Understand the AHA chain of survival, specifically the BLS components.
  • Recognize important early use of an AED.
  • Utilize effective ventilation with a barrier device./li>
  • Understand the importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR.
  • Administer relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants.

Pit & Fissure Sealants
Course Description

The Pit & Fissure Sealants course includes didactic lecture, clinical application of the etchant and sealant procedure, and evaluation of the procedure on live patients by a board-approved faculty member. For this course, there will be in-class lectures, a course handbook, and one-on-one training using laboratory experience and live human subjects.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is a Dental Board of California approved Pit & Fissure Sealants course and is a requirement for registered dental assistants to be able to perform pit and fissure sealants on patients in a dental office.

Course Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the major characteristics of oral anatomy and physiological tooth descriptions as they relate to pit and fissure application.
  • Explain the sealant procedure to patients.
  • Define the appropriate patient selection factors and indication factors for sealant application.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques, including disposal of contaminated material.
  • Demonstrate the proper procedure for applying pit and fissure sealants per State of California’s regulations for dental assistants.
  • Demonstrate the proper etchant technique for applying pit and fissure sealants per State of California’s regulations for dental assistants.
What to Expect
  • Day 1: Lecture, Written Exam, Laboratory Experience
  • Day 2: Clinical Experience on Two Patients, Clinical Examinations on Two Patients With Instructor Evaluation*

*On Day 2, students must bring in four volunteer patients total to complete sealants on. Volunteers must NOT have braces and MUST be older than 18 years of age. Each clinical patient MUST have a minimum of four (4) virgin, non-restored, natural teeth, sufficiently erupted so that a dry field can be maintained, for application of the etching, or etchant/bond combination, and sealant materials. Such clinical instruction shall include teeth in all four quadrants for each patient.

This program is all-inclusive and includes all supplies, materials and instruction manuals needed.

Prerequisites: Students must submit proof of their completion of coronal polish prior to being admitted into the pit and fissure sealants course.
