September Is National Gum Care Month and It’s Vital To Protect Your Child’s Gums

Posted .

September is National Gum Care Month and we have some tips to help your child’s gums stay as healthy as possible because the gums actually lay the foundation for good oral health! Unfortunately, around 1 in 5 children ranging between 5-11 years have at least one tooth that is decayed from gingivitis. Not only that, but around 60% of children in our country show signs of gum disease (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC).

When your child flashes you a smile, their gums should look pink (not red), be free from discoloration and not recede from the teeth they are supporting. If you notice inflammation or bleeding when your child brushes and flosses, they might have early onset gingivitis.

Signs of Gingivitis

  • Gum recession and tissue loss
  • Pockets between their teeth and gums
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • White spots on the gums

Your child’s gums need to be free from infection because it impacts their oral and overall health, and gingivitis and periodontitis are linked to diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other health problems.

Laser Treatment

With lasers, our doctors can boost your child’s gum health more comfortably, quickly and effectively. Lasers effectively treat periodontal disease by removing bacteria and infected tissue, re-contour the gum line and treating cold and canker sores too. Dental lasers also make it possible to treat your child without requiring an anesthetic. On top of that, lasers shorten treatment time and healing, as well as lower the risk of infection post-treatment. Lasers also lessen bleeding during and after treatment without harming surrounding healthy tissues.

Support Your Child’s Gum Health

Clean their gums when they are still infants by using a clean section of moist gauze. Once their teeth come in, switch to brushing instead and do this daily until they are old enough to brush their teeth (and around the gum line) all by themselves.
